Being a young boy, I was constantly unwell. I spent much of my young life in and out of hospitals and, for that reason, was never physically strong. Being a teenager, I was thinner and shorter than my colleagues, and normally picked on in school.
My parents thought, because of this, that it would be a good idea to sign me up for a seminar delving on self defense for beginners. The program taught me how to defend myself against assailants using a variety of techniques and tools.
Pepper spray came out to be my preference. It is a non-lethal weapon utilized often by law enforcement agencies. Upon contact, a defense spray will disarm an opponent by causing a burning feeling in their eyes as well as on their skin, allowing you to escape.
Moreover, strong pepper sprays cause coughing and choking, and make it difficult to breathe and also make the eyes to tear and swell shut. These kinds of effects are momentary and cause no long term damage to a target.
Some of the tools which we looked at were keychain pepper sprays. These types of small pepper sprays are usually little enough to be concealed inside a bag or pocket, or carried in your hand, allowing you to surprise an assailant.
I am not physically powerful enough for hand-to-hand combat that I decided to buy some defense spray for myself. I settled on a 1/2 oz. pepper spray with colored injection molded holster model which was just compact enough to fit on my keychain.
Being a 10% pepper spray, it is not very strong yet it is made from a finer grain which makes it more effective than most others. There is enough spray in it for 6 to 10 one-second bursts and is very affordable.
I carry my defense spray along with me wherever I go and I feel safer because of it. I don't regret learning self defense for beginners, as you can't put a price on the confidence you gain from knowing that you can protect yourself.
