Are Crackers Just For Christmas?

By Ian Spence

All said and done, it doesn't really feel like Christmas until you've pulled a cracker and found some wonderfully unexpected surprise in it. But why stop at Christmas? Why not have crackers for birthdays and other holidays? Crackers are a traditional part of Christmas and while most people know of its history, dating back to how they were invented by Tom Smith in 1847, not many people know that he meant for them to be used at all manner of occasions and celebrations.

Smith developed the cracker in 1847 following a trip to Paris and a love for Chinese fortune cookies. During his visit to France, Smith became a fan of the sweets 'bonbons' which were wrapped in a twisted paper. Smith was also impressed by fortune cookies which contained a little message inside once you broke them.

By combining the two and adding in a crack, Smith had invented the cracker. These days, you can find online stores where crackers are available in a number of different styles and customisable to the economic and social requirements of the customer. This article will highlight some of the occasions in your calendar where crackers could provide that extra spark to make that event even greater.

Weddings- Crackers can be of great use for Wedding receptions. You can get crackers that have a shiny and classier feel to them and fit in perfectly to the atmosphere of the occasion. Often, wedding crackers can be filled with items of your choice. In this instance, perhaps something that signals the date of the event on an item like a key ring. If you want to go the extra mile, you can always personalise the crackers of the bride and groom by adding their names.

Presents- For children (as well as many adults!) the best part of Christmas is opening presents. You can keep on top of your shopping list by making a list of who you need to buy for and what sort of present you are thinking of buying them. If you're unsure what particular individuals would like there is no harm in asking them! This is a much more productive way of buying presents rather than going blindly into packed shopping malls on Christmas Eve and having no idea what you need to buy.

Dinner parties- While Dinner parties are often classified as dignified and decorous occasions they can also be mundane affairs. With this in mind, what better way to break the ice than using some crackers? Again, the style of crackers can be chosen to match the occasion and can fit in with a classy and co-ordinated feel to a dinner party.

Halloween- October 31 is primarily regarded as Halloween and the event seems to be getting bigger every year. These crackers can be filled with some spooky treats to help get the kids in the mood for the night's festivities.
