Police Driving

By Amanda Kirby

A policeman's job is more than just being on the lookout for and catching speeding cars. They often have to transport criminals to jail and to court. Some criminals may not be too cooperative, so cops do have to chase them if necessary, especially if they start their car up again and take them on a chase. Police academy classes include driving lessons that keep our cops specially trained for all these high speed chases and emergencies.

The average cop car is better than your average roadworthy vehicle, and is considerably faster and safer. You may have noticed some of them going to very fast cars, especially the highway patrol. Modern-day muscle cars such as the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Charger are perfect for these fast-paced car or bike chases on any American road.

The amount of time that is required for the driving part of police training varies by state. Although many states have driving courses that are a lot longer and more intensive, the usual amount of time allotted to driving would be at least 40 to 45 hours. This part of the program involves many different learning techniques. The officers have to attend classroom training, watch videos, and then get out there behind the wheel and show what they have learned.

It may seem easy at first to drive someone from one place to another, but policemen need to do this with criminals, and therefore need more intensive training. Ensuring safety and a proper accomplishment of a policeman's tasks is important, thus the longer training hours. And any time a cop needs to go on a high speed chase, training would also need to be more intense and detailed.

As any good police officer can attest to, there is really no way to predict what will take place on a given day. A cop's duty is to serve and protect, and this can include just about any function there is in the book. Driving skills are essential to a policeman's success, and are a very important part of their training. Some officers may be asked to take refresher driving classes to make sure they still know how to do things the right way. This way they always have the most current information as techniques and procedures change.
