Do I need a dehumidifier?

By Tracy Poppins

As you may guess from its name, a dehumidifier is designed to lower the level of humidity in the air. Dehumidifiers for homes turn moisture from the air into liquid or vapour and collect it for disposal later on.

To work out whether you need one of these dehumidifiers for your home, there are a few things you need to look at. The first is the condition of your walls and ceilings. Can you see any mould or fungus growing? Do you often get damp patches emerging on surfaces? Is the paintwork blistering and woodwork rotting? Is there condensation on your windows? If you spot any of these symptoms, you may need a dehumidifier.

Using your sense of smell, you can work out whether you need a dehumidifier in your home. Do your rooms smell stuffy, damp or musty? If so, this could be an indicator that humidity is high in your home.

Another way to tell whether you need a dehumidifier or not is if someone in your home is suffering from allergies, the symptoms of which are more severe when they are at home. High humidity can encourage the growth of many allergens, such as fungus, mould and dust mites to name but a few.

Have you noticed that more insects, such as spiders and cockroaches, have been moving into your home recently? If so, you may need to get a dehumidifier to lower the humidity in your home, as these kinds of pests love more humid environments.

As well as making your home a healthier place to live, dehumidifiers can also prove to be very useful in baby's rooms. To aid your baby's breathing and improve asthma symptoms in young children, dehumidifiers for homes can be ideal. However, you should speak to your doctor before getting one for your child's room.
